The Cook and the Baker

The Cook and Baker is a breath of fresh air on the food scene in Sydney, with their delicious array of home baking. The Cook and Baker swung open its doors almost 12 months ago to a very happy crowd on Oxford Street, Bondi Junction. Owned by Cherie Bevan and Tass Tauroa, the bakery is a return to home family favourites.

“We wanted to open a bakery that harked back to traditional roots,” says Tass. Both Kiwis, they wanted to bake classics from New Zealand that no one was doing here. Hence, they have Kiwis flocking from all over Sydney for their signature Donuts, Ginger Crunch, Afghans, and Mince “n” Cheese pies.

As the Blackboard in the shop says: “At the Cook & Baker we are incredibly passionate about sharing the pleasure that food made with love can bring into your life. We love what we do and even more sharing it with you”, and this is very obvious, as they bake from scratch daily.

By 7am you can get hot from the oven: Nutella Brioche, Ham & Gruyere Croissants, Savoury Tarts with Creamed Corn, Cheddar & Shallots, and the list goes on. By mid morning the cabinet is bursting with the best sandwiches in Bondi Junction: Roast Pork & Apple Slaw, Roast Chicken & Sage Onion Stuffing, Croque Madames …

You cannot visit the Cook and Baker without taking home one of their signature donuts. Deliciously filled with vanilla custard and raspberry jam, and the new donut on the list is a classic with cinnamon and Rapadura sugar.

Like all good New Zealand café/bakeries, the Cook and Baker has a great selection of home made slices. We have been following the re-emergence of the humble slice as a smart cake cabinet add on, and this business is setting the standards. The presentation of the cake cabinet is amazing; it makes you want to climb in and have a personal glutinous party.

Serving Single Origin Coffee and using award winning Jersey Milk from Warrnambool, their coffee certainly is amongst the best in the neighbourhood.

The Cook and Baker is all about the vibe, and you feel great when you walk in the door and even better when you tuck into the delicious treats on your way out.

Open Tuesday to Sunday, 7am – 4pm.

238 Oxford Street, Bondi Junction, NSW 2022. Phone (02) 9388 0119
