Measurement Law Review

Australian businesses and consumers rely on accurate measurement to make the most of their money when purchasing goods and services.

The National Measurement Act and related legislation help regulate measurement in Australia. This legislation is currently being reviewed.

The Department of Industry, Innovation and Science is seeking your views on how to ensure the national measurement framework continues to meet the needs of Australians now and into the future.

The Measurement Law Review is identifying aspects of Australia’s Measurement framework that can be modernised, streamlined or simplified.

The review will develop reform options for the consideration of the Australian Government in 2020.

In considering Australia’s measurement framework, the review has 4 objectives:

  •     Developing and advancing measurement activities that support Australia and its economy.
  •     Strengthening strategic measurement capabilities.
  •     Supporting confidence in measurement – domestically and internationally.
  •     Promoting innovation through a modern approach to measurement infrastructure.

The review is gathering input and insights from stakeholders about Australia’s measurement legislation.

Six discussion papers are due to be released, each examining a specific aspect of Australia’s measurement framework.

The discussion papers will be released for input through our Consultation Hub.

The Scope of Australia’s Measurement Laws Discussion Paper opened for public consultation on 21 May 2018 and closed 22 July 2018. A high volume of submissions were received.

A second set of discussion papers are open for consultation from 4 April to 23 June 2019.

Two further discussion papers are expected to be released later this year.
