Katy Barfield, CEO & Founder of Yume, is the winner of the 2017 Telstra Victoria Business Women’s For-Purpose and Social Enterprise Award
 
Melbourne, Australia, October 11th 2017 – Katy Barfield, CEO and Founder of Yume, has been awarded the Victorian Telstra Business Women’s Award in the For Purpose and Social Enterprise category for her lifelong commitment to food waste prevention.
 
The Telstra Business Women’s Awards are Australia’s longest running and most esteemed women’s award program, celebrating leadership and creativity of Australia’s and Asia’s most inspirational business women. The Purpose and Social Enterprise award recognises those that deliver positive social/environmental change as their core mission.
 
“I’m incredibly honoured to win the Telstra Business Women’s award, being up against so many remarkable women. I come into work every day knowing that myself and my dedicated team are creating a positive impact on the environment, and to be celebrated for that is a great achievement” said Ms Barfield.
 
Katy founded Yume in March 2016, an online marketplace that connects food suppliers such as manufacturers and primary producers with commercial buyers (including caterers and hotels) to prevent surplus food from going to waste, by offering significant discounts on quality food.
 
The idea for Yume was born after Katy realised the sheer volume of food that was being thrown away in the commercial food sector all over Australia. Katy believed that to make a significant impact on the food waste mountain, a marketplace needed to be built that primary producers, manufacturers and the foodservice could be part of.
 
“Yume is directly tackling one of the most pressing issues facing the planet. If food waste were a country it would be the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases after China and the USA. Yume is an Australian first and through technology provides a solution to ensure that quality, edible food is eaten,” said Katy Barfield, Founder, Yume.
 
Katy’s position as founder and CEO of Yume follows roles at SecondBite and Spade & Barrow. As the founding CEO of SecondBite, Katy led the organisation in the redistribution of over two million kilograms of quality produce. In 2013, Katy launched Australia’s first wholesale fruit and veg business, Spade and Barrow (now Aussie Farmers Wholesale) to keep Australian farmers on the land.
 
As a leader in business and food rescue a like, Katy has worked to secure likeminded investors who are not only focussed on financial returns but also environmental and social benefits. 
 
Katy will attend the National Gala Dinner on the night of Tuesday 21 November along with the other State and Territory winners where the national winners will be announced.
