Café owners looking for a competitive edge are funding kitchen equipment and entire fit-outs as intense rivalry puts pressure on the industry, according to the fifth annual Hospitality Industry Success Index (HISI).

The HISI Report, which sources information from nearly 7,503 hospitality businesses and 202 detailed surveys, was released to the public today following a sneak preview at the Fine Foods Expo in Melbourne. It was commissioned by ASX-listed equipment finance company Silver Chef Limited.

The report revealed that competition in the coffee industry was fierce, with 34 per cent of Silver Chef customers operating cafés. Demand shows no sign of slowing, with the average Aussie coffee drinker consuming 478.4 cups a year*.
