Sprolo has recently opened at 138 Canning Highway in South Perth. Taking over an old mechanic’s parts shop, it has been converted into a spacious and minimalistic café that packages specialty coffee within a family-friendly setting. With a kids’ corner, plenty of space for prams and a restroom with baby-changing facilities, Sprolo is already a local family favourite. While this might be an unusual outfit for serious coffee, don’t let that fool you. These guys don’t take coffee lightly. With a custom-painted La Marzocco Linea PB placed in the spotlight alongside a filter bar, it is clear that they mean business.
The coffee is roasted in-house by Blacklist Coffee Roasters. With the 10 kg Has Garanti roaster on display, Blacklist Coffee Roasters provides all of Sprolo’s coffee needs and also supplies coffee to other cafés. The advantages of house-roasted coffee are evident in the final product. With two milk blends and a range of single origins on offer, customers are spoilt for choice before indulging in their amazing cup of coffee.
Sprolo and Blacklist Coffee Roasters are collaborations between Gabriel Tan and Darren Woon. Gabriel has a long background in the coffee industry, with several accolades to his name such as Licensed Q Grader, 2nd Place 2012 WA Barista Competition and 3rd Place 2011 AASCA Barista Championship. Darren comes from a Project Management background and when he’s not working in the café, he focuses on growing both businesses.
Sprolo also boasts an impressive line-up of baristas, including the likes of Rie Moustakas, who took 1st Place in the 2014 ASCA Latte Art Championship and 4th Place in the 2014 World Latte Art Championship.
Deviating off the beaten path of the typical breakfast fry-up, Sprolo offers a fresh and modern menu with a subtle Asian twist. Their signature dish, the Traditional Singaporean Breakfast, has been featured on Gourmet Traveller Hotplates and is definitely worth trying. With a constantly-evolving range of dishes that includes vegetarian and gluten-free options, the menu is sure to please.
Sprolo has already been featured in The Sunday Times and based on the crowds, it’s clear that Sprolo is doing something right. It is bringing new life to this part of South Perth, and the locals welcome it.
