Markets of Melbourne Announce Market Week 2013 – A Celebration of ICONIC Proportions!

Saturday 7th September – Sunday 15th September 2013

Market Week returns this September to celebrate Melbourne’s Markets’ iconic status. For more than 120 years, Prahran Market, South Melbourne Market, Dandenong Market and Queen Victoria Market have each been cemented as iconic symbols of food, trade and community. This will be the first time Dandenong Market has joined in the celebrations, making them even bigger than previous years!

We will also celebrate the icons within the icons – the renowned stalls, the passionate and knowledgeable traders and the fresh, local produce they bring to lucky Melburnians each week.

Highlight events in Market Week 2013 include:

The inaugural ‘Melbourne Market Awards Ceremony’ will take place on Sunday 8th September, with shoppers voting for their favourite traders in the lead up. The awards are designed to recognise the hard-working, much loved traders across all four markets. An expert panel will assess the favourite traders from each market across eight categories with Melbourne’s best market traders being announced at the ceremony. These winners will be celebrated throughout the week. Stay tuned for further announcements!

Shoppers can enjoy FREE tastings at all markets throughout Market Week, with a range of delicacies including seasonal root vegies, organic meats and even craft beer, cider and wine.

Cooking classes and demos are on offer again in 2013. Gain dicing and slicing skills at the Knife Handling Essentials class or become a master of Mediterranean Meals, among many other options.

FREE Market Tours will also be available at each market – only free during Market Week. This is a great opportunity to get to know the hidden secrets of your local market, or discover a new one from scratch. Why not take this chance to explore all four, guided by an expert!?

Free live music will be played to the public from a range of locations and there will be a selection of fun kids’ activities. This includes face painting, art and craft and Bike n Blend, a pedal power activity that gets kids to power their own smoothie making. Healthy and great for the environment!

The Great Icon Giveaways will be a memorable highlight of Market Week with iconic produce being given away absolutely FREE during selected times and dates, including the super famous South Melbourne Market Dim Sims.
