Specialty blends for men and women

WHOEVER said men were from Mars and women were from Venus was wrong. They’re from Brazil and Ethiopia, according to a Riverina coffee roaster.

The Blessed Bean owners Simone and Jason Dowding surveyed about 700 customers through blind cupping tests to distinguish the coffee characteristics favoured by each sex.

“We did a lot of surveys and used our customers as guinea pigs a lot,” Mr Dowding said.

“There’s a lot of debate as to whether men and women have different taste preferences but the results showed that men generally preferred deeper chocolates with the Brazilian pulp naturals and the women preferred lighter, fruitier tastes along the lines of the Ethiopian-wash coffees.”

So they created Hombre, an “adventurous and courageous” blend, for male customers.

“The Hombre embodies the essence at the core of every man. Flavours abound with deep chocolate, hazelnut, and a touch of tobacco. The subtle acidity and medium body bring balance to this brew. Lastly, ripe stone fruit will linger on the pallet. Hombre is reliable to the last drop.”

And for the ladies, they created Senorita.

“The Senorita is a classic female. It is short and sharp upfront which softens into a well-rounded blend. This coffee displays ripe fruit characteristics with a brightness and acidity that’s apparent from the first sip. Underneath the crema is a full bodied buxom wench that oozes the sweetness of milk chocolate and caramel. This is a coffee that leaves an after taste of desire and the need for another cup.”

The Blessed Bean owners, both 40, have been in business for two years but worked in cafes for almost a decade.

“All coffee is different and exhibits different characteristics and has its own personality,” Mr Dowding said.

“We wanted to take those different characteristics and make that into a personality, as in a blend of coffee that really exhibited the male and female preferences.”

“We really wanted to put it across to people in a way that was easy to understand so I came up with the descriptions. They’re a bit tongue in cheek but I just wanted to give the blends a strong personality.”

Meanwhile their sons Aiden, 7, and Zain, 9, prefer hot chocolate and a doughnut.
